This a light hearted travelogue about a 1963 trip to Tahiti and it's surrounding islands. The author, H. Allen Smith, was a famous, humerous writer of the time, with many such books written by him. His humor is rather dated and sexist by modern standards but what makes the book note worthy is that he went to Tahiti just before the flood of jet age tourism started. So as jet travel is just barely starting, much of old Tahiti is still in existence when he's there. Quinn's Bar as an example, is still there, he meets relatives of several legendary artists, Paul Gauguin's son, Edgar Leeteg's son, Charles Nordhoff's wife and son. Some of the newer writers of that era are also alive, William Stone, Ralph Varady, Bengt Danielsson (Kon tiki fame). Of real interest is the fact that the film Mutiny on the Bounty, the MGM version with Marlon Brando, just finished filming there. So there is a bit of gossip and behind the camera info about the project and actors. The author even manages to meet Brando briefly. The book describes the effect of the movie filming on the lives of the island and islanders.
